Want to be surrounded by like minded creative entrepreneurs in one of Leeds’ most unique and impressive Studios?

Leeds College of Art and Duke Studios are delighted to offer recent graduates the chance to start a new business or transfer a growing business, through our provision of a multidisciplinary creative space at Duke Studios. This is a great opportunity to integrate with the wider creative community in the city and to support graduates to develop their skills within a professional working environment after graduating.

This opportunity is only open to Leeds College of Art ex-students that graduated in the last 3 years. The space can accommodate up to 3-4 people and is open to all disciplines, although more suited to clean, screen-based work or making.

Final Call for BA (hons) Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) applicants!

We are going through the final stages of portfolio reviews and selection of applicants for next year. We’ve had some really fantastic candidates, and its been inspiring to witness the different ideas, aspirations and experiences of all these future art and design students.

We are still in the process of making offers for the last handful of places, so this is a last call out to any aspiring creative people who want to build their future with us on BA (hons) Art & Design (Interdisciplinary), from September 2012.

At the invitation of Olsen, Mud Office have programmed an afternoon of films and television broadcasts accompanied by food, drink and live music. The screening will combine Mud Office's recent series of video broadcasts with fragments of nature documentaries and films including Joseph Cornell's BY NIGHT WITH TORCH AND SPEAR, and Fischli and Weiss' THE RIGHT WAY.

Formed in 2005, Mud Office is a collaboration between artists Dan Robinson (Leeds), and Charlie Jeffery (Paris). The way they work and the things they produce, result from the specific contexts they are invited to work in and the resources that can be found there. Their previous work has involved forming a band, establishing a temporary cafeteria, manufacturing furniture, making architectural interventions and turning a hunt cabin into a broadcast studio.

A short review of PRE*

PRE* opening night (Monday 23^rd April) was hugely successful with a heavy footfall that (in the pouring rain) paid tribute to the promotional efforts in the lead up to the event.  Although the evening did not host much group discussion, the one-to-one type conversations between visitors and artists alike set the tone for the communication driven events of the coming days.  Elisa Heikkila and Carol Sowden’s participatory installations were particularly engaging exploring audience contributions/responses to bodies of work broadening the scope of experimentation and feedback.  The informal discussion was rich with quality criticism and interesting ideas triggered by the various displays/installations and became a valuable element of the programme’s process.

 Common room (Tuesday 24^th April) offered a second opportunity for a public exhibition opening with the addition of the consistent input from fellow third year degree students.  The atmosphere was lively and vibrant as the accessible nature of the ‘Enjoy’ art space encouraged the flow of people and interaction, with some featured artists taking the work from the space out into the street attracting much intrigue and positive reaction from passers by.  One visitor to the exhibition said:

“I’ve never been to an exhibition before and I don’t understand why people sit at home watching TV where everything is told to you, when you can come to an art exhibition and you can look at a piece and not necessarily understand it but you can look at it all day and find your own interpretation.” (Hell Boy. PRE* day 2)

Following the process theme, the exhibition space transformed as developments and reflection followed the opening night.  Discussion groups (Wednesday 25^th April) instigated much debate that often swayed from the proposed subject matter, however the relevance of the tangents reinforced the evident connection between individual practices and the PRE*/POST* proposal.  Tutorials were relocated to the exhibition space and took place within the central seating area so that the critical discussion and tutor input became a background conversation to the wider communal studio atmosphere.  One of the biggest developments taken from the experience of PRE* in its entirety has been the strength of the studio culture derived from the unsegregated space, allowing a visual conversation between both work and processes, that has begun to describe the underpinning narrative between the Interdisciplinary year of 2012 artist collective.

Making public the ongoing decisions that form a body of work will offer an alternative to the showcase of completed projects, putting the participant in the heart of the creative journey.

'Blueprints' Exhibition at Deda/Derby 29th March – 30th April

 

'We live our daily lives in a constant exchange with the set of daily appearances surrounding us – often they are very familiar, sometimes they are unexpected and new, but always they confirm us in our lives. They do so even when they are threatening: the sight of a house burning, for example, or a man approaching us with a knife between his teeth, still reminds us (ungently) of our life and its importance. What we habitually see confirms us…. Yet it can happen, suddenly, unexpectedly, and most frequently in the half-light of glimpses, that we catch sight of another visible order which intersects with ours and has nothing to do with it.’

‘Blueprints establishes the staring into the everyday, it focuses on the point of the body in space and it attempts to still and quiet the body whilst acutely aware of sensation. These Blueprints, ‘half light glimpses’ of the everyday body in space; between place and space. The reduction of line is used to create a graphic scoring of the body in space. It is this scoring that establishes the blueprint by which to create large scale pieces of work. The graphic line is an attempt to complete a notation of the body in space at once universal and absurd. Two singular concerns arise in this scoring; that of movement and that of sound, yet the line by its very nature stills this and fixes it as notation. For this reason the connection with the musicians’ tradition of graphic scoring is demonstrated within the images as the body recognises pulsation and resonance as both movement and sound in space. Thus the body is merely shadow that reverberates as energy in space underscored by a line.' Joanna Geldard

“My current art making practice explores the dilemma of what it means to inhabit a female body. I create installations and individual works that contain multiple layers of meaning; the work is subtle and surprising, disturbing and amusing. I alter and adapt ready-made objects that stand in as signifiers for the maternal body. I cast objects in unusual or unsuitable materials with the intention of suggesting an alternate reading of the original object. My intention is to promote in the viewer a complex response encompassing the cultural, political, social, historical and mythological agendas that inform our current perspective on motherhood and its role in contemporary society.”

Art event on Thursday 1st March in an empty space in Leeds City Centre. Artists in Leeds are often asked to be creative when thinking about sites to respond to and ways to present their work. In addition there is a tradition of individuals sustaining a creative practice by working collectively or collaboratively. Art in Unusual Spaces would like to celebrate and unpick this by inviting film and publication submissions of new or existing work in response to theme of work, play, collaboration, collectivity, domestic and commercial spaces.

From 13 till 17 February, GIDE (Group for International Design Education) had their 9th event with lectures, workshops and an international exhibition. GIDE Dundee 2012 International Workshop focussed on the ‘Design in Action’ ethos inspired by the V&A at Dundee project, and the building designed by Kengo Kuma

GIDE Dundee 2012 invited 170 design students from Milano, Leeds, Magdeburg, Lugano, Mechelen, Ljubljana and Dundee to collaborate in international and interdisciplinary teams to playfully explore, interpret and creatively respond to the Design in Action element of the V&A building.

A three day Flocking Workshop with two Belgium designers from Mechelen; Rudi Respeel and Jeff Rutten. They will be working with students and staff on B.A (Hons) Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) and Interior Design courses. The workshops take place during March 6th – 8th.

The workshop is funded as part of the Erasmus Exchange Mobility Programme. This is part of an ongoing teaching, research and student exchange programme; linked to the GIDE Group for International Design Education programme.
